Last week, New York witnessed a series of cybersecurity attacks that affected its video lottery terminals (VLTs) in casinos and disrupted two hospitals. Everi, the state’s operator for VLTs, was among the impacted. Brad Maione, a representative from the New York Gaming Commission, stated the matter was under investigation.
While no personal data breaches were confirmed by the commission, they remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the attack, such as potential ransom demands or the attackers’ identities. News 12 Long Island reported that Jake’s 58 casino and Resorts World Hudson Valley were affected. Resorts World resumed its operations swiftly, but Jake’s 58 faced more severe disruptions, leading to a shutdown for several days.
The New York Gaming Commission, in its official statement, mentioned, “On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, Everi, the licensed operator of New York’s video lottery gaming central system, experienced a cybersecurity event that remains under investigation.“
Hospitals weren’t spared either. Margaretville Hospital and HealthAlliance Hospital, both under the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, faced cybersecurity incidents. They continued to operate, although their operations were affected. The network stated that they had to shut down the IT systems of both hospitals on October 20 to address the cybersecurity threat. They further added, “We then began standing up our IT systems, a process that is ongoing, but we have regained all necessary capabilities to resume full operations.”
Last month saw similar cybersecurity incidents but on a grander scale. Renowned gaming and hospitality companies, Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International, fell victim to such attacks.
