A fire at a casino complex in the Cambodian town of Poipet, a border resort area with venues that service many players from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is prohibited, has claimed at least 19 lives and left more injured while many people remain unaccounted for.

According to the police, there were reportedly 400 individuals working at the site when the fire started. The death toll is predicted to grow, according to the local authorities, because a number of individuals are still missing.

According to Cambodian officials, a fire started inside the Grand Diamond City casino hotel on Wednesday December 28 at around 11.30 p.m. local time. According to them, the fire injured roughly 70 persons. The precise number of injured, however, is unknown because the figures provided by local authorities and cited by the media vary substantially.

The complex’s first floor is where the fire is believed to have begun, but it soon spread across the multistory structure.

Along the Cambodian side of the Thai border, there are a ton of casino hotels, including Poipet, which is a well-liked vacation spot for travelers from the neighboring country. By law, residents of Cambodia are not permitted to gamble in the nation’s casinos.
