Alabama Lawmakers Push to Revive Gambling Legislation

Legislators have indicated that they may take up the topic again in 2025, indicating that the fight over legal gambling in Alabama is still ongoing. Sponsors of the gaming measure from the last session are committed to continuing the discussion, according to WIAT.

“The issue is not going away, and it is very much still on the table,” sponsors told the outlet.

Expanding gambling has been a contentious topic in Alabama, where illegal gaming operations persist despite enforcement efforts. Lawmakers argue that regulating gambling could help curb illegal activities while generating revenue for the state.

Tackling Illegal Gambling with Tougher Penalties

Senator Greg Albritton, a proponent of gambling reform, highlighted the challenges of illegal gaming in Alabama. “It is here. It is here to stay. And the only thing we can do in Alabama is try to grasp control of that industry so we can protect the public and be a beneficiary of it,” Albritton said.

Albritton previously sponsored a statewide gambling bill that failed in the Senate last year. The legislation aimed to introduce a regulated gambling framework while addressing the proliferation of unlicensed gaming operations.

Under the proposed law, penalties for illegal gambling would become significantly harsher. Charges for operating unlicensed gambling machines or related offenses could escalate from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class C felony.

Additionally, the present maximum penalty of $6,000 would be drastically increased to $15,000 for first-time offenders. Repeat offenders may be charged with Class B felonies, subject to fines of up to $30,000, and sentenced to two to twenty years in prison.

Legal gambling proponents contend that regulation may help Alabama by providing control and tax income to an already-existing illegal sector. Discussions on this contentious topic may be rekindled during the next congressional session, opening the door for potential reform.

Lawmakers in Alabama are still committed to finding solutions that strike a balance between economic opportunity and public safety as the state struggles with illegal gaming.
