A significant rise in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the year ending December 31, 2023, was reported in the sixth monitoring report on Dutch online gambling published by the gaming regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). In comparison to the prior year, the report demonstrated a significant 28% increase in GGR, or €1.39bn. A growing online gaming sector in the Netherlands is evident in the total revenue explosion, even with a slight 1% gain in GGR over the last half of 2023. Expanding User Base and Player Demographics In 2023, there were 1.1 million active accounts, a 13% increase from the previous year. Young adults—those in their 18–23 age range—accounted for 22% of all gambling accounts, even though they made up just 9.5% of the population. The second half of 2023 saw an average loss of €958 for players, with young adults losing about €52 a month. Though there were reservations, the KSA revealed that the channelization rate was 90% higher than expected, meaning that a significant percentage of players were utilizing sites that offered legal gambling. In July 2023, a prohibition on untargeted advertising was put into effect; the study evaluated its effects. The prohibition appears to disproportionately impact non-gamblers, even if the market did not drop after it was implemented. This is indicated by the significant decrease in non-player visits to gambling websites.
