A significant legal dispute between Zimpler, a payment services provider, and Spelinspektionen, the Swedish gambling regulator, has gained momentum. In May, the administrative court in Linköping overturned a cease order issued by Spelinspektionen against Zimpler. The decision, however, is now under appeal to the Court of Appeal in Jönköping.
Spelinspektionen released a statement reaffirming its commitment to continue the legal battle. “The Gaming Authority does not share the administrative court’s assessment and is therefore appealing the verdict to the Court of Appeal in Jönköping,” stated the regulator.
The gambling watchdog disagreed with the court’s conclusion that it “lacked grounds for issuing the injunction” against Zimpler. Although the court recognized that Zimpler provided services to unlicensed operators, it noted that this did not necessarily mean those operators targeted Swedish customers.
Contrary to the court’s findings, Spelinspektionen argued, “By providing its payment service, Zimpler AB has promoted illegal gambling.” The regulator asserted that Zimpler’s role as an intermediary payment service provider facilitated illegal gambling activities in Sweden.
Coinciding with the announcement of the appeal, Spelinspektionen introduced a new digital assistant on its website. This assistant aims to answer frequently asked questions and provide information about Spelpaus.se, a free service for self-exclusion from gambling activities in Sweden.
Accessible through a dialogue box at the bottom right corner of the regulator’s website, the digital assistant represents Spelinspektionen’s ongoing effort to enhance user support. The regulator plans to expand the assistant’s capabilities by incorporating additional topics and updating information over time.
