Study Highlights Malware Risks on Gambling and Porn Content Websites

Share

A recent study found that visiting websites with gambling or pornographic material raises the likelihood of malware attacks. Fabio Massacci and his colleagues at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and the University of Trento conducted the study, which examines the relationship between virus exposure and user behavior.

Key Findings: Gambling and Adult Sites at Higher Risk

A dataset of 12 million entries from Trend Micro, which included users from the US, Japan, India, Brazil, Germany, France, the UK, and Italy, was used in the study. To find trends in malware encounters, researchers looked over 20,000 records.

The results pointed to gambling and adult content websites as significant hotspots for malware attacks. Fabio Massacci explained, “Both system behavior and content behavior increase the risk of encountering different types of malware.”

Despite these findings, the study emphasizes that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to prevent malware threats. It also revealed that the frequency of visits to such sites plays a role in malware exposure.

Hackers don’t solely target gambling and adult sites. They also exploit sites offering illegal activities or crime tutorials, such as “how to hack” guides. Common malware includes trojans, keyloggers, and cryptocurrency mining software, which hijack computing resources to mine tokens.

According to the study, licensed gaming websites seem to be less vulnerable to malware threats than illicit ones. This distinction does not apply to pornographic content, though, as almost every domain poses a risk to user security.

The study intends to inform firms about possible risks arising from employee internet behavior in addition to warning consumers. Employers may suffer large financial losses as a result of malware infestations, underscoring the significance of strong cybersecurity defenses.

The results highlight the importance of exercising caution when navigating the internet, especially when interacting with potentially harmful content. Massacci’s research clarifies how organizational and individual procedures might reduce the exposure to malware.
