Ubisoft’s latest game, Champions Tactics, sets a new precedent for the gaming firm, being its first fully original Web3 game. Champions Tactics integrates Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) as a core feature, showcasing Ubisoft’s continued interest in blockchain technology.
Announced in June 2023, Champions Tactics is a tactical role-playing game (RPG) with a unique gothic dark fantasy theme. It features distinct figurine-like characters, adding a novel dimension to the player-versus-player (PVP) experience. The game is set in Grimoria, a world ruled by seven factions, each with its Warlords and unique aesthetic styles.
A significant aspect of Champions Tactics is its Ethereum-based NFTs, known as Warlords. These NFTs serve dual purposes: as collectible art and as customizable avatars in the game. Players who collect Warlords NFTs will get early access to select Champions, the game’s playable characters, for free. This dual approach to NFTs demonstrates Ubisoft’s innovative integration of blockchain technology in gaming.
To participate in Champions Tactics NFT collection, players need a Ubisoft account, an Ethereum-compatible wallet, and sufficient Ethereum to cover transaction fees. The minting process, set to occur before the end of 2023, requires players to be over 18 and reside in an eligible country. However, certain countries, including China, France, and Russia, are restricted from participation.
Champions Tactics emphasizes skill over chance. Players select three Champions per match, each with unique battle skills. Additionally, Ubisoft has announced the possibility for players to create their own Champions. The game is scheduled for release as a PC application in early 2024.
