Grand Theft Auto VI will not launch on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Rockstar is building its next open world around current hardware, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S set for the console release.
Good to know
The clearest message may not come from Rockstar, but from Sony. Some PS4 owners who added GTA 6 to their PlayStation Store wishlist have received emails suggesting a PS5 upgrade before launch.
That fits the platform reality. GTA 6 has been confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while older consoles have been left out. Given the scale of Leonida, the return of Vice City and the level of visual detail shown so far, a PS4 or Xbox One version never looked likely.
Nintendo Switch also sits outside the current plan. Rockstar has not announced a Switch version, and the hardware gap makes one hard to expect.
Rockstar has not confirmed a PC release date. That means the November 19, 2026 launch remains a console date for now.
PC players have seen this before. GTA 4 arrived on PC about seven months after consoles, while GTA 5 took around 14 months. GTA 6 could follow a similar pattern, although Rockstar has not given a timeline.
Pre orders for the console versions begin June 25, which adds another sign that the current date is no longer just a placeholder.
GTA 6 takes players back to Vice City, now part of the fictional state of Leonida. The setting draws from Miami and Florida, with beaches, swamps, nightlife, strip clubs and wider crime networks all built into the world.
The story follows Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, giving the series its first female lead in a mainline GTA entry. Rockstar has also used Tom Petty song “Love is a Long Road” in the first trailer, helping frame the road trip crime tone around Lucia and Jason.
For players still on last gen consoles, the message is pretty blunt. GTA 6 is a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S game at launch, and the old machines are staying behind.
