Immutable Cuts 29 Jobs, Changes Development Model

Share

Immutable is reducing its direct game development work and turning more attention to tools for game publishers after another difficult stretch for blockchain gaming.

Good to know

  • Immutable has cut 29 staff members as part of a wider restructuring.
  • Gods Unchained will keep support, while Guild of Guardians will enter Evergreen and Maintenance Mode.
  • Immutable is now placing more weight on Immutable Audience, an AI powered marketing and analytics platform for game publishers.

Publisher Tools Take Priority Over Internal Game Builds

Immutable is no longer trying to carry as much game development inside the company. The blockchain gaming firm will outsource most of that work and keep only a smaller internal team.

That change puts more weight on Immutable Audience, a platform built to help web2 game publishers improve user acquisition, retention and player engagement. The product uses AI powered analytics and marketing tools, which gives Immutable a clearer service role in the games industry.

Immutable President Robbie Ferguson pointed to Ubisoft title Might & Magic Fates as an example of that strategy. “Our performance with Ubisoft’s ‘Might & Magic: Fates’ demonstrates our new approach,” Ferguson said.

He said Immutable tools helped lift early conversion and increased pre registration to download rates by 10.2%.

The logic is practical. Building hit games costs time, capital and luck. Selling infrastructure, analytics and marketing tools to publishers can create a wider business base, especially when web3 game launches remain difficult.

Gods Unchained Stays Active While Guild Of Guardians Slows

The cuts affect 29 roles, but Immutable still plans to support Gods Unchained, its main trading card game. The title remains the clearest consumer product tied to the company.

Guild of Guardians will receive far less attention. Immutable said the game will enter Evergreen and Maintenance Mode, which usually means limited updates, basic support and fewer new development plans.

That decision reflects a wider problem across blockchain gaming. Few projects have matched the earlier breakout attention of Axie Infinity or The Sandbox. Many web3 game tokens also lost most of their value after the 2022 peak, and venture funding for blockchain games has cooled.

Immutable also faces that market pressure through IMX. The token has fallen 99% from its high, according to the figures provided.

Financially, the company remains in loss making territory. Immutable reported a $48 million loss for fiscal 2024, slightly better than the $50 million loss recorded in 2023. Profitability is not expected before 2026.

Ferguson said the company still has enough capital to fund operations for the next decade, giving Immutable time to test its more service focused model.
