Square Enix is not slowing down on its blockchain ambitions just yet. Even as the final season of its Web3 game Symbiogenesis winds down, the company has taken an unexpected step: expanding the game’s reach to a new Ethereum-based network developed by Sony.
Good to know
The new campaign offers a shared incentive system across Symbiogenesis, Sleepagotchi, and Evermoon—all of which operate on the Soneium network. These are not just cosmetic add-ons. NFTs unlocked through limited-time quests in Symbiogenesis offer cross-game perks, special access to community events, and exclusive in-game benefits.
Square Enix explained it in their press release: “This isn’t just about unlocking digital stickers. The NFT you earn from completing a Symbiogenesis quest grants exclusive community mission perks.”
To be eligible for these items, players must complete the epilogues of Chapters 1 through 4 before the May 31 deadline.
Originally launched on the Polygon network, Symbiogenesis is now being integrated into Soneium, a blockchain developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs. This project is the result of a joint effort between Sony Group Corporation and Startale Labs. Even though Sony is involved, the expansion is not tied to its PlayStation business.
The Soneium network is open and decentralized, which means any development team can use it. That flexibility is what allowed Square Enix to plug Symbiogenesis into a new system without formal partnership terms.
Square Enix and Sony have worked together on major titles for decades. Final Fantasy VII, for example, launched on the first PlayStation back in 1997 and helped define Sony’s early years in gaming. Although this blockchain collaboration does not involve the PlayStation brand directly, the broader relationship between the two companies adds context to the move.
Symbiogenesis may be approaching its end in July, but the cross-game NFT initiative shows that Square Enix is still experimenting with how to keep players engaged through blockchain-based ecosystems.
