With great pride, Sony has revealed that, in less than three years after the console’s release, sales of the much-coveted PlayStation 5 (PS5) have crossed the 50 million unit barrier.
Since its release in November 2020, more over 50 million PS5 systems have been bought, according to the most recent statistics, which was as of December 9, 2023. This represents a significant milestone for the industry leader in video games. The console had previously sold 40 million copies in July, which is a notable increase of about 10 million units over the preceding four to five months.
There are a number of reasons for the spike in sales, but one of the main ones is the increased demand from customers brought about by the holidays. The highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 exclusive, which debuted in October and is now the fastest-selling PS Studios title ever, also probably had a big influence on the system’s higher uptake.
An eventful year for Sony is concluded with its outstanding sales performance. A revamped and more portable PS5 was also unveiled by Sony in 2023, along with other technology such as the PlayStation VR2 and the PlayStation Portal. Significant third-party exclusives such as Final Fantasy XVI were also featured by the firm, and it had a stint as the exclusive host of the highly regarded game Baldur’s Gate 3.
The PS5’s momentum is still a major topic as the game industry moves toward 2024. The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be available on Sony in January, among other releases. In addition, third-party exclusives have already been revealed, including Team Ninja’s Rise of the Rōnin in March and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which releases in February. With the arrival of the new year, the gaming community looks forward to further surprises and announcements from Sony.
