Sony’s much-anticipated slim version of the PlayStation 5 is set to debut this November, and it comes with a twist in its pricing strategy.
The gaming giant confirmed on Tuesday its plans to roll out a redesigned PlayStation 5 for the upcoming festive season. This iteration offers a unique choice to consumers: they can opt for a console either with or without a Blu-ray drive. The good news is, for those who change their minds post-purchase, the Blu-ray drive can be acquired separately and integrated with ease.
This next-gen PlayStation 5 touts a significant reduction in size—over 30% less volume compared to its predecessor. It’s not just compact; it’s lighter too, boasting a weight reduction of nearly 24%. Not to be overlooked is the enhanced internal SSD, which now offers 1TB for game storage, a boost from the previous 825GB.
Pricing details reveal some interesting dynamics. The digital variant, sans the disc drive, is pegged at $450, showing an uptick of $50 from the prior digital version. If gamers opt for the complete package, inclusive of the Blu-ray drive, it would set them back by $500. This aligns with the price tag of the existing model with a disc drive. The focal point here is the flexibility of the design. Sony’s approach is to have a single PlayStation 5 console design where the disc drive functions as an add-on. So, players who initially go digital can, at a later stage, integrate the disc drive for an additional $80 to enjoy PS5 games in their disc format.
Sony plans to phase out the older PlayStation 5 models, making way for the slim edition once the existing stock gets exhausted. Additionally, for those keen on giving their console a vertical stance, a new stand will be made available exclusively for this sleek version.
But the PlayStation 5 isn’t the only ace up Sony’s sleeve this year. Gamers can look forward to the PlayStation Portal, a handheld gadget priced at $200, launching on November 15. This device is crafted to stream games straight from a PlayStation 5 console.
