Days after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred canceled the first two series of the 2022 season, trading card company Topps caught headlines with baseball-themed non-fungible token (NFT) sales.
A first edition of the company’s “Topps Timeless Series,” an NFT of the storied 1952 baseball card of New York Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle got auctioned off for 175 ETH (roughly $471,000) at OpenSea on Friday night.
The Micky Mantle card sale is now among the largest-ever in the sports NFT landscape, topping NBA Top Shot’s $230,000 and $210,00 sales for limited edition LeBron James collectibles.
“The Mick” collectible is an official MLB licensed card and was sold in cooperation with the Mantle Estate as a package deal with the winning bidder also given the opportunity of a 30-minute interview with Mickey Mantle’s sons, Danny and David Mantle.
The Mantle sons said in a statement:
“This card has been part of my father’s legacy for 70 years, and it is amazing to see its continued impact with collectors and baseball fans around the world. We are very pleased to share this piece of history with Topps in a new and exciting way through NFTs.”
