Multinational financial services giant, Mastercard has recently filed 15 new trademark applications related to crypto, fintech and the metaverse.
Top trademark lawyer Mike Kondoudis reveals that the credit card giant is planning to create non-fungible token (NFT)-backed media, while bringing its payment processing and e-commerce transaction system to the metaverse. Mastercard is also exploring building a marketplace for crypto assets.
Mastercard’s requests reportedly include trademarks for downloadable multimedia files which include artwork, text, audio and video authenticated by NFTs.
Kondoudis also notes the firm’s filing indicate preparation for e-commerce software involving electronic business transactions in the metaverse, together with the use of virtual credit cards, debit cards and prepaid card in the virtual world.
In January, the credit card company partnered with Coinbase’s to allow users of its recently announced nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace to use their cards to make purchases.
