Donald Trump’s SEC Pick Expected to Shift Crypto Policies

Share

With his nomination of Paul Atkins to head the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), President-elect Donald Trump is setting the stage for a dramatic change in cryptocurrency regulation. It is anticipated that Atkins, a former SEC Commissioner, will adopt a more crypto-friendly posture if confirmed.

A New Direction for Crypto Regulation

According to a Reuters report citing anonymous sources, Atkins plans to overhaul the SEC’s approach to digital assets. His nomination follows the tenure of Gary Gensler, who aggressively pursued legal actions against major crypto firms like Coinbase, Kraken, Ripple Labs, and Consensys.

Gensler will step down on January 20th, coinciding with Trump’s inauguration. Pro-crypto SEC Commissioners Mark Uyeda and Hester Pierce are expected to take interim steps toward creating clearer regulatory guidelines. They aim to address key questions, such as whether specific digital assets qualify as securities.

In a move described as “unprecedented” by legal experts, the new leadership may pause ongoing lawsuits against crypto firms that do not involve fraud. This could signal a more collaborative approach between regulators and the crypto industry.

While the incoming SEC team may adopt a softer stance on crypto innovation, it does not plan to compromise on fraud enforcement. Robert Cohen, a former SEC enforcement division employee, emphasized the agency’s responsibility to hold wrongdoers accountable.

“I think the industry wants to see fraudsters or wrongdoers held accountable,” Cohen told Reuters.

Trump’s administration appears poised to recalibrate the SEC’s role in fostering innovation while maintaining market integrity. This potential policy shift could impact the broader cryptocurrency market, creating opportunities for firms seeking regulatory clarity.
