David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes, has revealed a new plan to teach local retailers how to accept bitcoin payments. As the city prepares to host the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) later this year, this move fits into its larger Web3 goal.
Cannes is holding training sessions to assist merchants in integrating cryptocurrency payment systems ahead of the EthCC, which is set to take place from June 30 to July 3, 2025. The first session will cover the technical, legal, accounting, and tax aspects of implementing cryptocurrency. It is scheduled for February 4 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
As part of the initiative, Cannes will also create a “crypto-friendly” merchant map. This guide will help EthCC attendees and tourists locate businesses in the city that accept digital currencies, boosting accessibility and promoting local commerce.
EthCC, Europe’s largest Ethereum event, is expected to attract over 6,500 registered participants and more than 10,000 total attendees. Mayor Lisnard emphasized that this initiative positions Cannes as a forward-thinking hub for blockchain innovation. It also offers local businesses the chance to connect with a global, tech-oriented audience.
Lisnard’s pro-crypto stance has drawn attention beyond the event itself. Some observers speculate this move could be part of a larger political strategy as he considers running in the 2027 French presidential election.
However, the immediate focus remains on enhancing local commerce and strengthening Cannes’ reputation as a premier destination for high-profile events. By embracing cryptocurrency payments, the city underscores its commitment to innovation and tourism growth.
