The Open Network has renamed Toncoin to Gram, bringing back the original token name tied to the early Telegram blockchain plan. The ticker also changes from TON to GRAM.
Good to know
The Open Network has brought back Gram as the official name for its native cryptocurrency. The change took effect at 8:00 PM UTC, with the ticker changing from TON to GRAM.
Token holders do not need to take any action. Every Toncoin balance converts to Gram at a 1:1 ratio, so users keep the same number of tokens under the new name.
The decision also had strong community backing. A vote showed 81.22% support for the change, giving The Open Network a clear mandate to return to the name first linked to Telegram blockchain plans.
Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, supported the decision and said:
“This decision reverts to the original Gram name, first introduced during the project’s inception by the Telegram team.”
The change reaches beyond crypto exchanges because TON has become part of the Telegram mini app and casual gaming ecosystem. Many games inside Telegram use blockchain features, token rewards, wallets or in app balances tied to the wider TON network.
For those users, the rename should not change day to day play. Game balances, app functions and wallet access should continue as before, with platforms updating names and tickers in the background.
The Open Network originally linked Gram to Telegram blockchain plans, but Telegram stepped away from the project in 2020 after regulatory problems. The TON Foundation later used the Toncoin name. Past legal issues have since been settled, including $1.2 billion in restitution to investors.
Now, the network wants one cleaner identity for exchanges, wallets, Telegram apps and crypto gaming projects using the ecosystem.
Major exchanges have started adjusting for the Toncoin to Gram change. Binance plans to remove current TON trading pairs and reopen trading under the GRAM ticker on July 2, 2026.
Other exchanges will follow the same 1:1 process, meaning users should not receive a new asset amount or need to complete a manual swap.
For the next three months, some platforms will show the token as “Gram (prev. Toncoin)” to reduce confusion. Full naming across platforms should finish by June 22, 2026.
Tax treatment can differ by country, but a simple rename without a token swap usually does not create a taxable event. Users should still check local rules, especially when exchanges update account statements or transaction histories.
