Binance Cuts Ties with AFA Citing Contractual Disputes

Share

Binance, the global cryptocurrency giant, has abruptly ended its partnership with the Argentine soccer association (AFA) barely a year into their five-year contract. The unexpected dissolution was due to contractual disagreements, with Binance citing the association’s inability to honor its obligations.

The official statement issued by Binance on Monday, originally in Spanish on Twitter, reflected their disappointment. The company expressed that AFA’s negligence to uphold contractual duties contradicted Binance’s business values and partnership ethos. “We regularly evaluate the results of our partnerships around the world and unfortunately, despite being offered time and opportunities, the AFA has not fully complied with its contractual obligations, which goes against our business values and our partnership principles,” Binance stated.

The commencement of this partnership took place in January 2022 when Binance sealed a deal with the Argentine soccer team, who were enjoying their status as the reigning world champions. But even from the onset, this contract was marred by disputes and controversy.

Before the establishment of the Binance-AFA relationship, the association had prematurely ended its contract with Socios, a fan token site. This move was to pave the way for their new partnership with Binance, which led to a lawsuit from Socios. Despite the legal issues, Socios retained its role as the exclusive provider of AFA’s official fan token, $ARG, which it will continue to supply until 2026.

The dissolution of the Binance-AFA partnership underlines the complexities and potential pitfalls when traditional sports institutions and emerging cryptocurrency firms merge. With contracts and fan loyalty hanging in the balance, the impact of this termination will undoubtedly reverberate within both the soccer and cryptocurrency worlds.
