Yield Guild Games Closes YGG Play And Cuts 35 Jobs

Share

Yield Guild Games will close YGG Play and redirect resources into AI training data after deciding that crypto game publishing no longer offers a workable commercial path.

Good to know

  • The closure affects 35 workers.
  • YGG Play generated more than $9 million in lifetime revenue.
  • YGG expects its $20.6 million treasury to fund operations for four years.

YGG Trades Game Publishing For AI Data

Strong early revenue could not save YGG Play from weak crypto liquidity and difficult publishing economics. The division signed nine games, worked with Pudgy Penguins and built its own launchpad, yet YGG concluded that continued investment would not produce sustainable returns. YGG Play reported more than $9 million in lifetime revenue by the end of Q1 2026.

“Sunsetting YGG Play is a heavy decision, but it is a market decision, not a product decision,” YGG co-founder Gabby Dizon said.

The company linked the decision to weaker retail crypto trading after the October 10 market crash, falling token prices and lower liquidity across consumer crypto products.

YGG will now build a business-to-business pipeline that supplies gaming datasets for AI model training. Player decisions, reactions and task completion can create behavioral data that developers may use to improve AI systems.

AI Alerts, formerly YGG Alerts, already forms part of that plan. YGG said the channel attracted 27,000 applications in five days by connecting Filipino workers with remote AI training jobs.

Games And Services Head For Closure

YGG will retire the YGG Play website, launchpad and community rewards platform. Marketing support for third-party games will also end.

LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper will close, while GIGACHADBAT and Ragnarok Breaker will continue under their respective studios. Current reporting indicates the main YGG Play services will end by August 1.

The restructuring affects 35 people across several teams. YGG said it will provide hiring referrals and help affected employees find other roles.

Financial reserves give the company time to test the AI strategy. YGG reported a $20.6 million treasury at the end of Q1, including $6.2 million in stablecoins, US Treasury bills and large-cap tokens. The cost reductions should extend its operating runway to about four years.
