TikTok is expanding its messaging tools, giving users more ways to connect directly on the app. The company says the latest update will roll out over the next few weeks, adding new features to make conversations feel more natural and engaging.
Good to know
TikTok’s new features are designed to make its messaging system feel closer to what users expect from apps like WhatsApp or Instagram. With voice notes, people can record short audio clips and send them directly in chats — a format especially popular with Gen Z.
Photo and video sharing has also been expanded. Users can capture new content or upload from their camera roll, edit it, and then send it to friends or groups. To prevent misuse, TikTok won’t allow images or videos as the very first message in a new conversation. The app will also remind people to consider their privacy before sending media.
DMs remain unavailable for anyone under 16, and for users between 16 and 18, TikTok has extra safeguards. Automated detection systems block nude images from being sent, ensuring the receiver never sees them. Adults can choose to keep this filter active if they want extra protection.
The update follows other recent messaging improvements. TikTok added group chats for up to 32 people last year, along with Creator Chat Rooms where fans can interact directly with content creators. With these new DM features, the company is clearly positioning itself as more than an entertainment app — aiming to be part of everyday digital communication.
