The Sandbox has opened pre-registration for the playtest of NEXT, a new mobile battle royale game tied to its wider gaming ecosystem. The launch adds another access point for users as The Sandbox keeps building beyond desktop and browser play.
Good to Know
Rather than stay focused only on browser and desktop access, The Sandbox is now bringing players into its ecosystem through mobile. NEXT is designed as a fast PvP battle royale experience where players carry over identity, progression, and assets from The Sandbox platform.
That connection matters because The Sandbox is not treating NEXT as a stand-alone title. Instead, the game works as another path into a broader web3 gaming ecosystem built around collecting, playing, and digital identity.
“Like our recent launch of WebGL games, NEXT is part of our plan to increase the reach of The Sandbox so players can discover, play and come back more often, whether they’re on desktop or on their phone,” said Robby Yung, CEO of The Sandbox. “The goal is to meet people where they spend their time. A native mobile experience in addition to the desktop version makes that possible in a way browser access alone can’t.”
NEXT also brings a technical change for the company. The Sandbox built the game on Unreal Engine, while the main Sandbox platform has historically run on Unity. For users, that points to a different type of gameplay focus, one built around quicker matches and more direct combat.
Players in NEXT can enter either the Desert or the City. The Desert is built around open sightlines and long-range combat, while the City leans into vertical movement and tighter engagements. Matches support solo play or groups, with up to 20 players in each instance.
Season 7 already started opening access in other ways. The Sandbox recently introduced three browser-based games as a lower-friction way for players to enter the platform. NEXT adds mobile to that strategy, giving the company another way to pull in users who may not start on desktop.
For The Sandbox, mobile matters because reach matters. The company has more than 400 brand and IP partners across gaming, music, fashion, and culture, including Warner Music Group, Gucci, Ubisoft, Snoop Dogg, and Lacoste. A mobile battle royale gives that network another format that may bring in new players and keep existing users more active.
Pre-registration for the NEXT playtest is open until 25 March 2026 at 2 p.m. UTC. The playtest begins on 26 March, and The Sandbox said more features will roll out over time as the game develops.
