Rioter Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill recently disclosed that the League of Legends team is going through changes with the goal of long-term enhancements for the game and its community. Initially revealed in a post on X, Merrill answered worries about possible layoffs by stating that although personnel changes are occurring, the team would eventually grow to support the continued development of the game.
Although some may have interpreted the news as another round of layoffs, Merrill was quick to explain that the team will “eventually be even larger than it is today.” He emphasized that Riot Games is preparing for the next phase of League of Legends, which will carry the game forward for the next 15 years and beyond.
Riot has committed to supporting those affected by the restructuring. Merrill confirmed that employees who are let go will receive severance packages that include at least six months’ pay, health coverage, job placement support, and an annual bonus.
The announcement comes just weeks before League of Legends celebrates its 15th anniversary, and follows significant layoffs earlier this year when Riot reduced its workforce by 11%, affecting over 500 employees, including those from Riot Forge and Legends of Runeterra teams.
Merrill explained that these changes are part of Riot’s strategy to increase operational effectiveness and adopt a “sustainable approach to delivering what players need.” According to a report from GameDeveloper, 32 employees have been let go in this latest restructuring. Out of these, 28 were League of Legends developers, while the remaining five were from Riot’s publishing division.
Earlier in March, Tryndamere shared that Riot’s MMO project had been reset, as its development had become too similar to League of Legends. As Riot continues to evolve, these decisions reflect the company’s broader vision for the future of its flagship title and other projects.
