OpenAI filed a response to a lawsuit brought by Matthew and Maria Raine, who allege that ChatGPT contributed to the death of their 16-year-old son, Adam. The company stated in its filing that it should not be held liable for the incident and pointed to multiple occasions where the system directed the teen to seek help.

OpenAI stated that Adam interacted with ChatGPT for about nine months. According to the company, the system advised him to seek help more than one hundred times during that period. In the lawsuit, the family argues that Adam managed to work around the safety protocols and obtain harmful information that assisted him in planning what the chatbot allegedly described as a “beautiful suicide.”
OpenAI argued that such behavior violated its terms of use, which prohibit users from bypassing protective measures. The company also noted that its FAQ warns users not to rely on outputs without independent verification.
Jay Edelson, the Raine family attorney, responded:
“OpenAI tries to find fault in everyone else, including, amazingly, saying that Adam himself violated its terms and conditions by engaging with ChatGPT in the very way it was programmed to act.”
OpenAI submitted excerpts from Adam chat logs under seal, meaning they are not publicly accessible. The company said these transcripts show broader context around his conversations and assert that Adam had long-standing depression and suicidal ideation before using ChatGPT. OpenAI also noted that he was taking a medication that can intensify suicidal thoughts.
Edelson disputed OpenAI position, stating that the company has not addressed the most alarming part of the family claim.
“OpenAI and Sam Altman have no explanation for the last hours of Adam’s life, when ChatGPT gave him a pep talk and then offered to write a suicide note,” Edelson said.
Since the Raine lawsuit was filed, seven more cases have been submitted alleging harm connected to AI interactions. The claims involve three additional suicides and four situations described in filings as AI-induced psychotic episodes. The Raine case is expected to reach a jury trial, positioning it as a potentially influential legal battle in the discussion over AI safety and corporate accountability.
