Meta has struck a long-term energy deal to secure power for its AI and data center growth. The company will purchase 1.1 gigawatts of electricity from Constellation’s Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois, starting in 2027.
Good to know
Meta said nuclear energy offers the steady, dependable power it needs to support its expanding artificial intelligence systems. The company is integrating AI tools across Facebook and Instagram and is on track to automate ad creation fully by the end of 2025.
Power demands from AI infrastructure are rising fast. According to the International Energy Agency, AI data centers could more than double their electricity consumption by 2030, reaching levels just above Japan’s current national usage.
In addition to securing its future energy needs, Meta said the agreement helps keep the Clinton plant operational and will add 30 megawatts to the grid. The deal also avoids using Illinois’ Zero Emission Credit program, meaning no new costs will be passed on to ratepayers.
Meta also highlighted that the partnership will contribute $13.5 million in annual tax revenue and support over 1,100 jobs tied to the facility.
