Esports has grown in popularity in Germany, with millions of fans eagerly tuning in for major events like the “League of Legends” world championship. A recent survey by game – The German Games Industry Association, in partnership with YouGov, reveals the staggering extent of this phenomenon. Approximately 16 million Germans, nearly a quarter of the population, have watched an esports tournament or match. This number represents an increase of over 4 million since 2020.
The rise in esports viewership is particularly noticeable among younger Germans. Almost half of those aged 16-24 and 45% of those aged 25-34 are regular esports viewers. These fans are not just passive observers; about 27% have favorite teams they support fervently.
The growth of esports in Germany isn’t limited to viewership. Around 10 million German gamers, which constitutes 23% of all gamers in the country, have actively participated in esports competitions, including LAN parties and online leagues. This is a big rise from the 18% participation rate in 2020, highlighting the increasing engagement in esports activities.
Top esports teams like BIG, G2 Esports, and SK Gaming have put Germany on the global esports map. Felix Falk, Managing Director of game – The German Games Industry Association, notes, “Esports events have become genuine crowd-pullers right here in our country.” He points out the political support esports has garnered, citing examples like Schleswig-Holstein’s state championships and funded esports regional center, North Rhine-Westphalia’s backing of its talent team through the esports player foundation, and Munich hosting the 2024 League of Legends EMEA Championship.
This political backing is playing a pivotal role in enhancing Germany’s appeal as a hub for gamers and fans, signaling a bright future for esports in the country.
