The Esports World Cup Foundation (“EWCF”) and SNK Corporation have signed a three-year partnership, bringing the eagerly anticipated FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves to the 2025 Esports World Cup. This is a significant step for the esports community. After 26 years, the renowned fighting game franchise is making a comeback with this new edition, which will make its debut at the biggest gaming convention in the world in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The inclusion of FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves in the upcoming Esports World Cup is a strategic push to reintroduce the iconic franchise to a new generation of players. Initially released in 1991, FATAL FURY became a pioneer in the fighting game genre, and its influence remains significant today. With the release of City of the Wolves in April 2025, SNK aims to connect its classic appeal with the excitement of modern competitive gaming.
The EWC Club Championship will be central to this revival. The tournament will feature the game as part of a growing competitive scene, inviting both new and veteran players to take part in the esports experience.
“FATAL FURY is a cornerstone of fighting game history, a franchise that helped ignite the competitive spirit of the 1990s arcade boom and set the stage for the genre’s mainstream revolution,” said Fabian Scheuermann, Chief Games Officer at EWCF. “As fighting games and retro titles experience a global resurgence, fueled by nostalgia, competitive depth, and community-driven passion, we are thrilled to partner with SNK for the next three years to bring this legendary series to the Esports World Cup stage.”
SNK’s FATAL FURY series has garnered a dedicated fan base over its three-decade history, with Garou: Mark of the Wolves being the last installment in 1999. Now, with the announcement of City of the Wolves in 2025, the franchise is set for a grand return. FATAL FURY has been known for its unique characters, such as Terry Bogard, and its rich, immersive gameplay, which contributed to the global rise of competitive fighting games.
Kenji Matsubara, CEO of SNK Corporation, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “This partnership marks a historic milestone for FATAL FURY, a title loved around the world for 30 years, as it steps into the competitive gaming arena. The Esports World Cup provides the perfect platform to showcase the franchise’s enduring legacy while engaging a new generation of fans.”
The inclusion of FATAL FURY adds another major title to the Esports World Cup’s impressive roster. The 2025 event will feature 20 tournaments across 19 game titles, with more to be revealed. The competition’s format, which includes the Club Championship, is set to offer an exciting cross-game challenge that rewards Clubs and players based on their performance.
The 2024 Esports World Cup saw 200 Clubs and 1,500 athletes from 100 countries competing for a $60 million prize pool, and the 2025 edition is expected to build on that success.
