Discord Delays Global Age Verification Rollout to Late 2026

Discord confirmed that it will delay plans to introduce global age verification, shifting the rollout timeline to the second half of 2026 while revising how the system will work.

Earlier announcements triggered backlash after users believed access to the platform would require identity checks. Initial messaging suggested all accounts would default to a teen appropriate experience unless verified as adults.

Company leaders later clarified that internal safety systems already identify many adult users through behavioral and account signals such as account age, payment history, and server participation. Those signals allow most users to continue normal activity without completing verification steps.

Chief Technology Officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy acknowledged communication issues around the rollout. He said:

“Let me be upfront: we knew this rollout was going to be controversial. Any time you introduce something that touches identity and verification, people are going to have strong feelings. Rightfully so. In hindsight, we should have provided more detail about our intentions and how the process works.

“The way this landed, many of you walked away thinking we’re requiring face scans and ID uploads from everyone just to use Discord. That’s not what’s happening, but the fact that so many people believe it tells us we failed at our most basic job: clearly explaining what we’re doing and why.”

Users who fall into the smaller group requiring verification will receive multiple options. Earlier plans referenced facial age estimation or document submission through vendor partners. Discord now intends to introduce alternatives such as credit card based verification before expanding the system worldwide.

Vishnevskiy also said:

“If you choose not to verify, here’s exactly what happens: you keep your account, your servers, your friends list, your DMs, and voice chat. The only thing that changes is you won’t be able to access age-restricted content or change certain default safety settings designed to protect teens. Nothing else about your Discord experience changes.”
