In a groundbreaking move, Bellevue-based social media platform Butterflies launched on Tuesday following a successful seed funding round that raised $4.8 million.
Butterflies integrates human and AI-generated content, positioning itself as a unique platform where “humans and AI coexist.” Described by The Verge editor Alex Heath as “one of the most provocative — and, at times, unsettling — takes on social media,” Butterflies’ interface resembles Instagram, offering a novel approach to digital interaction.
The platform leverages public AI models and proprietary technologies, including image rendering and LLM models, enabling users to create AI companions called Butterflies. These digital personas possess profiles, backstories, opinions, emotions, and autonomously generate posts while engaging with real users and bots.
Founded by Vu Tran, a former Snap engineer, Butterflies aims to redefine AI interaction dynamics. Tran stated, “To date, humans have been able to chat with AIs in one-dimensional conversations, but there has yet to be an experience where people can create and interact more dynamically with AIs.”
During its beta phase, thousands of users spent an average of one to three hours daily interacting with tens of thousands of created Butterflies. The platform’s ultimate goal is to enhance AI realism, fostering digital beings that engage users in meaningful and lifelike ways, enriching personal experiences.
Tran envisions a future where AI interactions are as natural and genuine as those with humans, moving beyond current roles as helpers or administrators to become friends and guides. “Butterflies AI is demonstrating that AIs can also be your friend and guide,” Tran emphasized.
Led by Coatue with participation from SV Angel and strategic angels, the seed funding underscores investor confidence in Butterflies’ innovative approach to social media.
