Telegram Faces Cybercrime Investigation in India, But Ban Unlikely

Share

The popular messaging program Telegram, which is extensively utilized in the bitcoin industry, is being attentively examined by India’s cybercrime authorities. Multiple reports indicate that in spite of this examination, a ban on the site appears unlikely at this moment.

The usage of Telegram in illicit operations is the main focus of the cybercrime section of India’s inquiry. The investigation was started in response to claims that Telegram may have been involved in the notorious exam paper leak incident involving the country’s entrance exam for undergraduate medical programs. Significant concerns have been raised by this issue, leading authorities to investigate further into potential abuses of Telegram.

However, Telegram appears to be adhering to India’s Information Technology (IT) rules. Sources from the Ministry of Home Affairs, speaking to Republic News, emphasized that the messaging service is compliant with the current regulations. They clarified that while the investigation is ongoing, there is no immediate threat of a ban.

No Immediate Ban Expected

Although the possibility of a ban has been a topic of discussion, sources indicate that such a move is not on the horizon. The unnamed officials noted that the investigation’s outcome would depend on the findings, particularly regarding Telegram’s role, if any, in the scandal. However, they stressed that as of now, there is no urgent need to block the platform.

Telegram’s importance in the cryptocurrency ecosystem and its widespread use make any potential ban a matter of significant concern. Nonetheless, the current stance suggests that the platform will continue to operate in India while the investigation unfolds.
