Sorare Adapts to French NFT Rules with Innovative Entry Method

Sorare, a web3 fantasy sports company, has devised an alternative entry mechanism for participants in France in order to comply with France’s proposed NFT laws. Sorare has offered a temporary solution in partnership with the French National Gaming Authority (ANJ) while actively working on their long-term roadmap amid ongoing regulatory talks. The new entry mechanism is already available for Sorare: Football and will be extended to Sorare: MLB on May 26, 2023, and Sorare: NBA in the autumn.

The decision to implement the alternate entrance method is in response to the French government’s ambitions to impose stronger rules on in-game asset trading. Because the current structure does not completely support platforms such as Sorare, the company has found proactive ways to comply with the requirements in the interim.

“This development is part of Sorare’s roadmap to build an inclusive ecosystem uniting tens of millions of sports fans, and support its mission to bring these fans closer to the players, teams and leagues they love,” said a Sorare spokesperson. “It does not impact the structure of Sorare’s core game or competition, or its cards.”

While the new entry mechanism allows French players to access Sorare, the framework imposes certain gameplay constraints. In France, players can join the game by submitting their phone number and confirmation of residency. They will, however, be unable to compete utilising NFT copies of digital cards with unique rarity attributes. Instead, their lineups will include non-blockchain versions of cards with properties similar to Sorare’s NFT-based cards.

Sorare has already under pressure from French authorities to change its restrictions due to the country’s gaming regulations. In response to the French gambling Authority’s November announcement advocating more examination of Web3 gambling, Sorare expanded free access to its game to meet the ANJ’s standards.
