Meta Expands Horizon Worlds to Mobile and Web

Share

By expanding its Horizon Worlds virtual reality (VR) platform beyond the limitations of VR headsets, Meta is making a big advancement after more than a year and a half of work. Meta recently revealed its plans to bring Horizon Worlds to mobile devices and the web, beginning with an early access release, in a blog post dated September 14.

Mobile and Web Access to Horizon Worlds

The goal of Meta’s initiative to make Horizon Worlds available on mobile and online platforms is to increase the usability of its metaverse idea. Super Rumble, a multiplayer shooter game, will initially only be available to a “small number of people” via the Meta Quest app for Android and web browsers. Additionally, iOS compatibility is anticipated to become available “in the coming weeks.”

The choice to extend Horizon Worlds beyond VR headsets demonstrates Meta’s dedication to opening out the metaverse to a larger audience. Although a promising idea, the metaverse has had difficulty producing engaging material and experiences, a gap that Meta seeks to fill.

Gradual Rollout and User Feedback

This extension will be implemented by Meta in a phased release. As Horizon Worlds is improved, the business intends to gather user input and insights. Although specifics of early access availability are still ambiguous, Meta intends to gradually increase user access to their flagship virtual application.

This tactical move comes after Meta recently announced a partnership with 15 colleges in the US to support immersive learning in the metaverse. These colleges, which include renowned schools like Stanford University and Arizona State University, are actively investigating the metaverse’s educational possibilities.

Challenges and Ambitions

While Horizon Worlds has a great idea, there have been complaints about its quality in the past. It received criticism in 2022 from detractors and even Meta staff members who voiced worries over the user experience. With an anticipated cost of approximately $7.5 billion, Meta has committed enormous resources to the project in order to secure its success.

Similar to well-known games like Minecraft and Roblox, Horizon environments enables players to construct and engage in virtual environments. Its lofty vision for the metaverse and its continuing dedication to overcome obstacles in the pursuit to make the metaverse a thriving reality are reflected in Meta’s ambition to improve and extend Horizon Worlds.
