It is planned that Henson Orser, the CEO of the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) of the United Arab Emirates, would leave his role. Henson Orser, who became the CEO of VARA in January, has been instrumental in managing the regulatory environment around cryptocurrencies in the United Arab Emirates. But his imminent departure makes it possible for Matthew White to be named as his replacement. It is anticipated that White, who is now a consultant for VARA and a partner at PwC, would move seamlessly into the leadership position in the upcoming months.
During Orser’s time at VARA, important regulatory advancements have occurred, such as the introduction of new structures designed specifically for the supervision of virtual currencies. Dubai’s policy for managing virtual assets underwent a significant change when these policies were implemented in early 2023, particularly in light of the FTX collapse the year before.
Notably, prominent cryptocurrency exchanges that presently possess partial licenses for digital assets in Dubai—like Binance, Bybit, and OKX—are not included in the list of organizations that would be subject to fines right away. According to reports from Bloomberg, VARA plans to give these well-known companies—among others—more time to reach complete compliance with the extensive license requirements.
