Indian Railways Introduces NFT-Based Tickets for MahaKumbh Mela

Share

Indian Railways plans to improve the MahaKumbh Mela experience by offering train tickets based on non-fungible tokens (NFT). Millions of pilgrims will now be able to travel more easily and digitally thanks to blockchain technology during this ancient Hindu event, which is observed only every 144 years.

Chaincode Consulting and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) announced their partnership on January 13. The goal of this program is to increase the pilgrimage’s technological sophistication and accessibility for tourists from all over the world.

Blockchain to Transform Ticketing

The NFT tickets will operate on the Polygon blockchain, known for its speed, low transaction costs, and eco-friendly framework. These tickets, accessible through the NFTtrace platform, provide a secure and scalable solution for managing real-world assets (RWAs) and traceability.

Alok Gupta, CEO of Chaincode Consulting, shared the vision behind this project. He stated, “By partnering with IRCTC and leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we are enabling a digital-first experience that complements the spiritual and traditional significance of the Mahakumbh while introducing a new level of engagement through NFTs.”

This effort is part of India’s growing adoption of blockchain technology in public services. By integrating NFTs, Indian Railways plans to offer travelers not just tickets but also collectible, verifiable digital assets that commemorate their spiritual journey.

Every day, over 1.2 million train tickets are booked via IRCTC’s platform. The NFT initiative will allow Indian Railways to better manage the influx of passengers while also offering an innovative souvenir for participants.

The MahaKumbh Mela holds significant cultural value, recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Over the years, it has attracted notable figures like actor Richard Gere, filmmaker David Lynch, and the Dalai Lama.

Blockchain-based ticketing has already been investigated by Indian Railways, most notably for the 2024 Holi celebration. The potential of NFTs as a contemporary means of commemorating customary occasions was emphasized by that campaign.

Indian Railways is reinventing how technology may enhance cultural experiences with the MahaKumbh Mela NFT initiative.
