Dogecoin Now Accepted for Tesla Merchandise

Share

Electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, has started accepting dogecoin payments for some of its merchandise. ‘Dogefather’ and CEO Elon Musk made the announcement himself on on Twitter early Friday morning after in December last year he had already hinted at DOGE acceptance at Tesla.

After the news broke, DOGE surged nearly 15%. Nevertheless, it has lost a bit of its gains since.  It is currently trading at $0.1835, up 17% in the last seven days according to CoinMarketCap.

There are a couple of items in the Tesla online shop that can only be bought with the meme crypto, such as a Cybertruck Graffiti Cuffed Beanie that costs 205 DOGE, a Giga Texas Belt Buckle that costs 835 DOGE and a Cyberquad for Kids that costs 12,020 DOGE.

Tesla’s website further notes that for now it is only dogecoin that it will accept and warns people not to use other cryptocurrencies.

It says:

“Tesla only accepts dogecoin … Non-dogecoin digital assets sent to Tesla will not be returned to the purchaser.”

Interestingly, reports on social media appeared of people who have noticed that the source code on Tesla’s vehicle payment pages contains the word “dogecoin,” which could indicate that the Shiba Inu inspired coin can soon also be used for vehicle purchases.

Meanwhile, the inclusion of DOGE while snubbing Bitcoin (BTC) is still frowned upon as Tesla is still not accepting bitcoin for payments, after it suspended it citing environmental concerns. Musk did note that Tesla will resume accepting BTC once there would be at least 50% renewable energy used to maintain the network, something many claim is already a reality.
