Crypto Miner Marathon Pledges $500K to Brink for Bitcoin Development

Crypto Miner Marathon CEO Fred Thiel stressed the significance of proper financing for the development and maintenance of the open-source Bitcoin Core client software said recently. Marathon Digital Holdings, a notable Bitcoin mining company, announced that they would match donations to Brink, a non-profit Bitcoin research and development organisation.

Marathon committed to match donations up to $500,000 during the Bitcoin 2023 conference in Miami Beach, Florida. Following the conference, they would match additional contributions one-for-one through December 31.

The monies will be used to support grants and programmes that financially pay Bitcoin Core engineers, who are critical in building and maintaining the technology for the world’s premier blockchain. The Bitcoin ecosystem relies significantly on voluntary donations to continue its development as an open-source and decentralised project.

Marathon’s commitment to finance Bitcoin Core development is especially significant given earlier this year’s fears about a probable drop in Bitcoin funding owing to market downturns, colloquially known as “crypto winter” in the industry. Marathon hopes to demonstrate its support for the Bitcoin funding environment by committing to match donations, demonstrating the willingness of a vested corporate body to contribute monetarily.

Marathon CEO Fred Thiel emphasised the significance of compensating developers, adding that they frequently incur the costs themselves and rely on subsidies like those offered by Brink.

“We believe it’s really important that these developers get paid,” said Marathon CEO Fred Thiel recently. “They operate out of their own pockets and the only way they can get funding is through grants like what Brink does.”

Brink, founded in 2020, promotes Bitcoin protocol development through initiatives such as the fellowship mentorship initiative and developer awards. At the conference, Thiel and Mike Schmidt, co-founder and executive director of Brink, jointly announced the contribution drive.

Approximately $280,000 had been donated through Brink’s donation page as of the reporting time, showing a positive reaction to the programme.

“As a miner, the most important thing is global adoption of Bitcoin,” Thiel said. “Our primary priorities are making sure that Bitcoin Core development and maintenance is properly funded. We’re going to work with a lot of the industry partners that we have, to get them to also contribute.”
