Decentral Games have announced a partnership with Atari to operate an Atari Casino this coming May.
The casino will be located on 20 plots of land in the Vegas City casino district in the Ethereum-based Decentraland virtual world and will allow people to earn DG tokens by playing with MANA, DAI and the Atari token (ATRI). The land has been leased on an initial two-year term. With a growing community, additional crypto casinos are expected to pop up in Decentraland.
Atari is a historic brand that has been in the video game business since 1972, having released classics such as Pacman, Asteroids and Pong. Now it set on gaining relevance in the twenty-first century by moving in on crypto.
The Atari Casino will feature a virtual building with the brand’s iconic logo and will launch next month with giveaways, exclusive NFTs as prizes and even a live performance by DJ and producer Dillon Francis.
Atari first revealed plans for a crypto casino in November. In January, plans that the project would use the so-called “Layer 2” solution Polygon were revealed. This in order to counter high fees on the Ethereum blockchain.
Decentral Games stated that 88% of profits will go to its DAO treasury which will benefit DG token holders. These funds will then be used to develop new features and to share rewards with the DG community.
The casino offering will see a mix of skill and luck required and will include an “Atari special” for the old school among us, which is focused purely on skill alone.
At the end of 2020, Atari Chief Executive Officer Frederic Chenais shared that he is a proponent of blockhain and is looking to adopt the technology in its various games and applications in the near future:
“I’m a strong believer in blockchain; I think it’s here to stay. Blockchain is the only way for some people to have access to meaningful income.”
Hinting on Atari targeting the crypto ‘whales’, he added:
“We are able to attract a slightly older crowd of people to blockchain. We play right into the demographics.”
Atari is not only interested virtual (crypto)casinos. There are plans in the making for physical Atari Hotels and Resorts across the United States with a first resort expected to open in Las Vegas by 2022.
