Indonesia Freezes 1,000+ Bank Accounts in Online Gambling Crackdown

Indonesia is widening its online gambling crackdown through banks, content blocks, and payment controls. The latest step targeted another 1,000 accounts tied to illegal betting.

Good to Know

  • Indonesia froze over 1,000 bank accounts linked to online gambling on 13 April.
  • The total number of blocked accounts has now reached 33,252 since 2024.
  • Authorities say online gambling volume fell 57% from 2024 to 2025.

Indonesia Pushes Harder on Online Gambling

Indonesia has added another 1,000 bank accounts to its online gambling enforcement list, extending a broad campaign that already hit 33,252 accounts since 2024. The latest action came on Monday through coordination led by the Financial Services Authority, known as OJK.

OJK has framed the issue as more than a law enforcement matter. Board member and banking head Dian Ediana Rae said in March: “Online gambling … has wide-ranging effects on the economy and financial sector.” He added that OJK had asked banks to carry out enhanced due diligence or block 33,252 accounts tied to the activity.

The country takes a zero tolerance line on gambling. As the largest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia bans all forms of gambling under Sharia law for both locals and foreigners. The 1974 Control of Gambling Law called gambling “contrary to religion, decency and the morals of Pancasila, and dangerous to the life of the community, nation and state”. The law also set out a goal of the “complete elimination [of gambling] from the territory”.

Online betting later forced the legal system to catch up. Mobile apps and social media opened a new route for access, and Indonesia did not pass specific new legislation against online gambling until 2024. From October 2024 to May 2025, authorities blocked more than 1.3 million pieces of online gambling content. Officials also rolled out plans to stop e wallets being used for online gambling, and the ban now also covers crypto betting.

Authorities say the pressure is showing up in the numbers. According to the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, online gambling volume dropped 57% from 2024 to 2025.

Penalties remain tough. Players can face up to five years in prison and fines of up to RP1 billion, or about $66,000. Operators and promoters can lose assets and face business licensing bans for 10 years. Indonesia does not directly name prediction markets in the ban, but event based wagering is also generally treated as a criminal offence.
