Poker players to grow by 20-30% in India: Viaan Industries

Gone are the days when poker was considered illegal gambling, with its popularity in India,  it has now transformed into a game of skill and people are ready to rely and bet on it. Raj Kundra, MD, Viaan  Industries is confident of poker enthusiasts to grow by 20-30 percent in FY18. The stocks of Viaan Industries have witnessed a surge of nearly 150 percent in the last one year.  Three more companies have decided to jump into the fray for the next season on Indian Poker League in March. Now, there would be ten companies competing against each other in the league.

Raj Kundra revealed their plans of launching a show with Viacom in the animation segment this March.  He also said they plan to launch a new Domestic Diva in January. With the growing fondness for poker, Raj Kundra also highlighted the growth that poker industry had witnessed on the business end when they posted about Rs 128 crore in revenue with Rs 13 crore profits and they target for Rs 25 crore in FY18. 

“The future growth is very promising, the pipeline is robust and we have new games,”  he added. India has over a million active poker players in India and the enthusiasts are growing by 20-30 percent.

“India never had a structured poker tournament. What we are bringing is a skill-based team sport. There is no luck or gambling. The winners will get to represent India in the Poker World Cup,” Kundra affirmed. Raj Kundra’s Viaan Industries sealed contracts with eight franchise owners in September, including actor-producer Sachiin Joshi, actor Harman Baweja and a few companies, ahead of the debut season of the Indian Poker League. Team owners would pay Rs 50 lakh as a one-time franchise fee and Rs 50 lakh per year as license charges.

The card game poker is witnessing an uptake in India with corporate behemoths promoting it as a game that uses the rules of psychology, game theory mathematics to blow away the stigma of it being considered as gambling
