Worldcoin Finds a Way into Minecraft: What’s Different?

Share

Minecraft, the world-famous block-building game, has been known for its strict policy against cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Mojang, the game’s developer, along with Microsoft, its publisher, have firmly opposed the integration of such technologies in the game, even on fan-run servers. This stance made headlines when Minecraft decided to ban the use of NFTs and cryptocurrency rewards, leading to the closure of features like Bitcoin payouts on servers.

However, a recent development has raised eyebrows. Worldcoin, renowned for its unique “Orb” technology that scans retinas to create a distinct IrisCode, has announced its integration with Minecraft. This integration doesn’t involve cryptocurrency transactions or NFTs. Instead, it utilizes Worldcoin’s World ID system for user authentication in Minecraft. This system helps server operators ensure players are real humans, not bots, enhancing security and player interaction.

In a response, Worldcoin has emphasized the significance of this feature. They noted that with the increase in bots in online gaming, the World ID can verify a player’s humanity while maintaining privacy. This is especially useful in reducing griefing, a common problem in online gaming where players disrupt the game experience for others.

The latest version of Minecraft’s end-user license agreement (EULA) sheds more light on this. It specifically bans play-to-earn features involving cryptocurrency and the use of NFTs that create exclusivity. It seems that Worldcoin’s integration, focusing on player verification rather than digital currency transactions, falls within these guidelines.
