An exclusivity deal between Telegram and the TON Foundation paves the way for a revolutionary 2025. This agreement makes the TON blockchain the exclusive protocol used to link games and web3 wallets on Telegram, and it becomes the only infrastructure underlying all mini-apps on the network.
Developers who incorporate web3 wallets into their Telegram games are required to implement TON Connect within a month as part of this agreement. This criterion guarantees that TON will be the only method used by all Telegram web3 mini-apps to link wallets and facilitate onchain transactions.
Projects like Tatsumeeko’s Lumina Hunt, which was previously connected via Ronin, and other platforms like Immutable that had enabled Telegram integration face difficulties as a result of this change.
TON will be the sole cryptocurrency used for a number of Telegram services, including as Premium subscriptions, Gateway, Stars, and Ads, in addition to powering mini-apps. This action strengthens Toncoin’s position as Telegram’s main non-fiat payment option.
Toncoin’s functionality will extend further, becoming the sole token used to compensate Telegram-based game developers for earned Stars and ad revenue. The collaboration between the TON Foundation and Telegram has steadily grown since September 2023. Their ambitious goal aims to onboard 30% of Telegram’s active users to TON by 2028. By November 2024, the partnership had already achieved 34 million onchain-activated TON wallets on Telegram.
Stotz emphasized the unmatched potential of this collaboration, stating, “Telegram is the sixth most downloaded app in the world, a beacon for free speech, and the default messaging platform for the global blockchain community. No other blockchain has a comparable distribution vector. As TON continues its global expansion, we reiterate our ambition to empower over 500 million users before the end of the decade.”
