As part of Netflix’s growing collection of games available solely to subscribers, the well-known Grand Theft Auto trilogy—GTA3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas—has now officially made its way to mobile devices. On December 14, the much anticipated mobile premiere of the games will be possible through the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Netflix mobile app.
Despite previous denials from a Netflix spokesman who labeled internet reports as “speculation,” the massive streaming service has now formally revealed that Grand Theft Auto will be part of their library of games. Senior Director of Game Partnerships at Netflix Ray Bautista stressed the strategic value of working with Rockstar, the company that developed Grand Theft Auto.
“Rockstar was the very first call I made after agreeing to take the job at Netflix,” Bautista shared in a LinkedIn post. Acknowledging the enduring impact of Grand Theft Auto in the gaming industry, he stated, “There are very few true needle movers remaining in the games industry today, and Grand Theft Auto is one of them.”
The Grand Theft Auto trilogy’s inclusion fits in with Netflix’s larger plan to extend its offers beyond the world of original TV shows like “Stranger Things” and “The Crown” by venturing into the gaming industry. Notably, Netflix’s iOS gaming controller software improves the gaming experience by enabling users to stream certain games on a laptop or TV.
Rockstar Games plans to release the official trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, which is greatly anticipated, at the same time as this announcement. As Netflix presents the mobile trilogy, the gaming community is excited to learn more about the next game. Gamers’ excitement has grown as a result of recent remarks made by Take Two’s CEO, Rockstar’s parent company, suggesting a possible release window of April 2024 to March 2025.
