Netflix Builds A Separate Games App For Families

Netflix is narrowing its gaming effort and aiming it at families. The company is launching Netflix Playground, a stand alone app for kids games that comes with a Netflix subscription and skips ads as well as in app purchases.

  • Worldwide rollout starts on April 28 after an initial launch in six markets

A Smaller Games Plan With A Clearer Audience

After a broad gaming push lost traction, Netflix is trying a much simpler route. Instead of chasing every type of player, it is putting younger children first with one separate app built around familiar characters and quick mobile play.

Playground opens with titles tied to known shows. Kids can jump into “Playtime With Peppa Pig,” try “Sesame Street,” or play games linked to “Storybots,” “Bad Dinosaurs,” and “Let’s Color.” Netflix says the library will keep growing over time.

Offline access is one of the main selling points. Families can use the app without mobile service or Wi Fi, which Netflix says makes it useful for flights, grocery trips, and other moments where a connected app is less practical.

The rollout is already underway in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand. Netflix said the app will go worldwide on April 28. It is available on both iOS and Android.

The company is also trying to tie gaming more closely to its shows instead of treating games like a separate project.

John Derderian said:

“We’re building a world where kids can not only watch their favorite stories, they can step inside them and interact with their favorite characters.

“We’re creating a seamless destination for discovery, learning, and play. Whether it’s reuniting with Hank and the ‘Trash Truck’ crew for new adventures or making a smoothie with ‘Peppa Pig,’ watching and playing on Netflix can be the fun and easiest part of every family’s day.”

That strategy lands after a mixed run in games. Netflix entered gaming in 2021 with bigger ambitions, but later pulled back after titles struggled to gain traction. The company also shut down studios including Boss Fight, Spry Fox, and an AAA studio. More recently, it started trying TV party games and has kept talking about cloud gaming, though those plans are still early.
