Immutable Moves to One Unified Chain for Web3 Gaming

Share

Immutable plans to bring its entire ecosystem onto a single chain by combining Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM. The transition is scheduled for late 2025 and will simplify the developer experience, improve gameplay for users, and boost asset liquidity.

Immutable X, its original Ethereum Layer-2 solution, will merge into Immutable zkEVM, which went live in early 2024 and has already processed nearly 150 million transactions. After the merge, the network will be known simply as “Immutable.”

No action is needed from users. All assets will move automatically to the unified chain. Immutable will handle all migration and gas fees. Wallet addresses, smart contracts, RPCs, and chain IDs will remain the same, making the switch seamless for players and developers alike.

For players using Immutable Passport or MetaMask, assets will appear at the same wallet address but will now be on zkEVM. Those staking assets will get new options on zkEVM as well. There’s also an opt-out for anyone who prefers to bridge assets back to Ethereum before the move.

“It’s about giving every Immutable game access to the full power of EVM compatibility, making it easier for devs to use popular tools and libraries, and for players to enjoy smoother gameplay and better token liquidity,” the Immutable team said.

Games like Guild of Guardians, Gods Unchained, and Illuvium already run on Immutable. Many others are preparing to make the switch. Guild of Guardians was among the first to migrate in 2024, with more projects now in the process.

The merge gives all games access to ERC1155 support, which improves liquidity for in-game assets. Developers also gain easier access to third-party DeFi tools, fiat onramps, and EVM-compatible smart contracts.

Projects built on Immutable X won’t need to rewrite everything from scratch. Immutable will automatically migrate standard ERC20 and ERC721 tokens. Teams that need special handling or prefer using ERC1155 can request custom support.

Apps using Immutable X APIs will need to update their integrations. That includes switching to zkEVM RPCs and replacing legacy calls tied to Immutable Link. Immutable has already published migration guides to help developers through the process.
