GTA 6 Could Bring User-Generated Content to the Franchise

Rockstar Games may be preparing to make Grand Theft Auto 6 (Trailer) more than just another sequel. Reports suggest the company is exploring ways to integrate user-generated content (UGC), allowing creators to build custom experiences within the game. According to Digiday, Rockstar has been in discussions with top content creators from Fortnite, Roblox, and GTA’s own modding community about incorporating custom assets and branding.

The move follows Rockstar’s 2023 acquisition of Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, two popular mods that have allowed players to create role-playing servers in GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. These mods have kept GTA 5 thriving on Twitch, even 14 years after its release. Some industry experts believe this acquisition was a strategic step toward integrating UGC into GTA 6.

Pete Basgen, global gaming and esports lead at Wavemaker, stated, “It is my firm belief that the reason they purchased FiveM is exactly that—to spin up a metaversal universe of custom-built experiences, and potentially UGC items, with an attached UGC creator economy.”

How Could This Change GTA 6?

If Rockstar adopts a UGC-driven model, creators might gain tools to design their own in-game content. However, it remains unclear if they would be able to monetize their creations, as platforms like Roblox and Fortnite do. These games allow creators to earn money through in-game purchases, subscriptions, and brand partnerships. Rockstar has yet to confirm if GTA 6 will follow a similar structure.

Historically, Rockstar has avoided real-world brands in GTA, using parodies instead. But with rumors that GTA 6 has a massive $2 billion budget, speculation is growing that the studio may allow in-game advertising. This could align with a creator-driven model, where brands set up virtual experiences much like in Fortnite.

With GTA 6 expected to launch in Fall 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and a PC version likely in early 2026, Rockstar remains silent on whether these features will be confirmed before release. If true, this would be one of the biggest shifts the franchise has ever seen.
