Ember Sword Closes After Years of Development and Millions Raised

Share

Many web3 games launched with hype and investor backing, but only a few reach completion. Ember Sword has now joined the list of failures after Bright Star Studios officially shut down the project.

Good to know

  • Ember Sword raised millions but never released a full version.
  • The game shut down due to lack of funding despite previous investments.
  • Community reaction has been largely negative, with many calling it a scam.

Bright Star Studios ended all development on Ember Sword, their web3 MMORPG project, after years of trying to deliver on big promises. The team announced the closure via Discord, stating that ongoing development was no longer possible due to financial issues.

Backed by high-profile names like Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin and YouTuber Dr Disrespect, Ember Sword was designed as a classless MMORPG set in the fantasy world of Thanabus. It aimed to build a player-driven economy where land ownership and item trading happened through NFTs on the Ethereum network.

Players once looked forward to trading cosmetics, claiming land, and shaping the game world. Early support came through a 2021 land sale, which pulled in pledges of over $203 million from more than 35,000 applicants.

Where It Went Wrong

Despite the strong start, the project faced constant development issues. After starting with Unity, the team later switched to a proprietary engine, Project SERIUS. The move was intended to boost browser performance but slowed development instead.

Closed beta tests and a late 2024 early access release failed to impress. Players criticized the game’s lack of content, rough mechanics, and poor balance. Reviews labeled it as unfinished, and expectations quickly faded.

In the final statement on Discord, the developers wrote, “We explored every possible way forward, but the current web3 and gaming market made it impossible.” The team thanked the community but admitted they could not continue.

The closure sparked anger from many in the community, accusing the developers of deception.

Ember Sword now joins other projects like Nyan Heroes, Blast Royale, and Tatsumeeko in shutting down. While Tatsumeeko’s developers plan to continue with a smaller project, Ember Sword leaves behind a community with little to show for their investment.
