CCP Games has opened up EVE Frontier, its fully onchain version of EVE Online, to the public for a limited time. After running in closed alpha, the game is now free to play until Monday, July 7—but players should expect a different kind of experience from the classic MMO.
Good to know
To jump in, you’ll need to create an account on the EVE Frontier website, download the PC launcher, and then install the game itself. As part of the setup, you’ll also create a blockchain wallet. Right now, the game only operates on a testnet, so there’s no real value tied to any assets, and game data is reset often as each new “era” begins.
Like traditional EVE titles, EVE Frontier does not hold your hand. It can be a bit tricky to get used to—especially for those new to blockchain gaming—but it is still accessible, and some community members are already sharing how-to videos to help newcomers along.
For those who want to keep playing beyond the trial, Founder Access passes are available. Prices range from $30 to $100, depending on the tier. Each pass includes different benefits like post-launch game access and even name reservations for your in-game identity.
The current version remains in early development, with all in-game progress regularly reset, but it marks a key step in CCP’s move to bring EVE into the fully onchain gaming space.
