The renowned anime and manga series Captain Tsubasa from Japan has made a foray into the world of blockchain gaming. Oasys’ Web3-focused gaming blockchain saw the release of Captain Tsubasa’s NFT soccer game on May 20.

Yōichi Takahashi’s well-known manga from the 1980s, Captain Tsubasa, is now playable as an NFT-based soccer game. The creative game, created by Blocksmith and Mint Town, was first unveiled in 2022 and released on January 12, 2023. On June 4, 2023, the governance token for the game was also made available.

In this game, players can collect NFTs featuring characters from the original series. Gamers can develop these characters, form teams, and participate in various game modes. The Rival mode lets players revisit the original storyline, while the player-versus-player (PvP) mode allows for online competitive play. Furthermore, the game offers an Arena mode where players can engage in 11 versus 11 soccer matches.

Hiroshi Kunimitsu, CEO of Mint Town, emphasized the innovative nature of this integration: “Integrating into the Oasys blockchain gives fans a new way to experience the animated story. This release demonstrates the capabilities of blockchain technology in enhancing interactive entertainment and gaming.”

A Legacy Continued

Captain Tsubasa debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1981 and was adapted into an anime in 1983. Over the years, it inspired numerous movies and TV adaptations, with the latest series airing in 2018. By 2023, the franchise had sold 90 million copies worldwide, cementing its status as one of the best-selling manga series ever.

GameFi studios are starting to operate more as the cryptocurrency economy starts to rebound. For instance, on May 15, Guild of Guardians was made available on Google Play and the Apple App Store by Immutable’s Web3 game company. Furthermore, as of May 13, the Web3 game Pixels had over one million active daily players and $4.4 million in token income. On February 22, Pixels made the switch to the Ronin blockchain and were valued at $2.7 billion.
