According to a recent publication by CNBC, American multinational retail giant Walmart Inc., is silently getting ready to enter the metaverse and non-fungible token (NFT) industry.

As reported by Lauren Thomas, Walmart has filed seven trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The trademark applications were filed on December 30, 2021 and include cryptocurrency solutions, blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs)

In a comment sent to the author of the CNBC publication, Walmart stated that the company is continuously testing new ideas and that the global retail corporation is “continuously exploring how emerging technologies may shape future shopping experiences,” adding that:

“Some ideas become products or services that make it to customers. And some we test, iterate, and learn from.”

One filing describes downloadable software that leverages digital currencies and concepts like augmented reality, while another talks about a virtual reality (VR) game that features a virtual version of a Walmart store.

The filings are not Walmart’s first steps into the world of crypto. In August, the megastore started a search for a cryptocurrency product lead to give shape to the company’s digital currency strategy. A month later, the company rolled out 200 Bitcoin-outlets in partnership with the digital currency exchange platform CoinMe.
