After hackers were able to take $625 million from the Ronin blockchain that supports Sky Mavis’ Axie Infinity game on Tuesday, the developers have assured the affected players will be reimbursed.
Attackers were able to find a backdoor in a Ronin node and then used hacked private keys to withdraw 173,600 ether and $25.5 million in USDC.
Sky Mavis Chief Operating Officer and co-founder, Aleksander Leonard Larsen, said that the stolen funds included the deposits of players and speculators, plus revenue from the Axie Infinity Treasury.
Larsen made a statement Wednesday on Twitter, where he also summarized what led to the theft:
Larsen then added that Sky Mavis will reimburse those affected:
“We are committed to ensuring that all of the drained funds are recovered or reimbursed, and we are continuing conversations with our stakeholders to determine the best course of action.”
Right after the hack was announced, AXS, Axie Infinity’s native token, dropped as much as 11%, while the Ronin blockchain token RON lost about 20%.
