Governor of the Bank of Spain Pablo Hernández de Cos recently refuted the idea that the European Union urgently needs a digital euro. He emphasized the effectiveness of the current European and Spanish payment systems while also recognizing the significance of the European Central Bank's (ECB) digital euro initiative. Hernández de Cos underlined that against popular belief, central bankers are being cautious in their assessments. Slowdowns and Skepticism The European Central Bank's (ECB) investigation into a central bank digital currency (CBDC)—that is, a digital equivalent of the euro for use in retail payments—started out quickly but ran into legal issues earlier this year. Conspiracy theories about the digital euro being a weapon for state control were born out of political resistance and legitimate privacy concerns. Hernández de Cos emphasized how crucial it is to create a CBDC in order to reduce threats to monetary policy and financial stability. "I am fully aware that, in its current state, this initiative raises many questions both for society in general and for the financial industry," said Hernández de Cos. Though he expressed misgivings, he made it clear that there isn't an urgent need to introduce a digital euro at this time. But the governor ordered that construction on the project should start. With the entry of the digital euro project into a "preparation phase" in November, the European Central Bank (ECB) is working to complete a rulebook and choose platform development and testing suppliers. Hernández de Cos emphasized that maintaining the payment system's resilience is a shared duty between the financial sector and the central bank, since it is essential to the health of society. He feels that the Eurosystem's previous and future efforts are justified in navigating the challenges of establishing a digital euro, regardless of the ultimate conclusion.
